Attempted Murder
©Jack: Behind the Wall

I relieved Officer James in tower thirteen. He had been stabbed fifteen times while working in housing unit four, an honor house. I asked him what happened.

"I was sitting on that table outside of the office door. A couple of guys on an upper tier started yelling at me, trying to distract me, when Greenfield came around the corner from the stairwell with a shank taped in each hand. I jumped up, and he was coming at me, swinging. I grabbed my radio with the lapel mike to yell for help, but he slashed at it. Wires were hanging out all over and I didn't know if anyone could hear me or not, but I played it like they could. I was very official. "10-5! Officer needs assistance in four house!"

It turns out I was getting through. He backed me up the length of the house to the stairwell that goes down to the shower room. I didn't realize I was there and I went over backwards in a summersault. I cracked my knee and landed on my head. He came running down the stairs to finish me off.

I've got a wife and two kids and I made up my mind I was going home to them. I grabbed one of those shower bars, pulled myself up, and kicked him in the jaw. That slowed him up some and when he came at me again, I kicked him in the leg. I didn't think that would do much good, but he had a metal plate in his leg from a couple of years ago and I guess I loosened up a couple of bolts. He turned and ran back up the stairs with me chasing after him. Inmates were lining the railings of the walks chanting, "Kill him! Kill him!" I thought, "Oh, Lord, how am I going to be able to deal with this?" but the door was still open from main line, (Dinner), and help started pouring in.

The investigators said it was a contract hit. Someone had paid him to kill Sgt. Francis. Do I look like Sgt. Francis? I've got a blue shirt. He has a white shirt! DUH!"
