BRACE Character Profile™
Name of Person Rated: John Mark Karr Input Ratings by: Russell L. Smith Date rated: September 15, 2006 BRACE Character Profile™ analysis by: Russell L. Smith Date of report: October 1, 2006
John Mark Karr was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand on August 16, 2006 as a suspect in the death of JonBenet Ramsey. On August 28, 2006 the case was subsequently vacated due to lack of evidence. The input ratings for John Mark Karr’s BRACE Character Profile are based on media reports and public records, including the taped phone conversations between Michael Tracey and John Mark Karr.
STANDARD INFORMATION: The underlying structure of the BRACE Character Profile™ is based on three prototypical character types (Type A, Type B, and Type C), which are each rated on a 5-point scale on eight Cognitive variables, eight Behavior variables, and eight Existential or Motivation variables. The basic graphic generated by a BRACE Character Profile™ represents the degree to which the rated individual’s characteristic manner of thought, behavior, and motivation is similar to or different from each of the three prototypical character types. Once rated, the individual can be compared and contrasted with any previously rated individual, real or imagined, dead or alive, and to any other “prototypical type” in the BRACE Character Profile™ database (DSM-IV-TR™ personality disorders, 40-point Hare PCL-R, Asperger’s Disorder, etc.).
The input ratings for the BRACE Character Profile™ can be completed by anyone with basic reading skills and the ability to objectively rate statements about a well known or accurately imagined individual. The BRACE Character Profile™ provides a wealth of information, but the individual rated must be well known or clearly imagined. Consensus ratings by two or more individuals increase the knowledge base and minimize rating biases. However, one objective rater with good knowledge of the character being rated is sufficient. An analysis of the BRACE Character Profile™ graphics and correlation charts requires basic knowledge of the three prototypical character types, which is available on the internet in the Frequently Asked Section of www.BRACEanalysis.com.
In the final analysis, the BRACE Character Profile™ merely puts the image that is in the rater’s mind into an objective and meaningful format, which can be shared and considered from many different angles, much like a hologram or a virtual reality tour of a house. The bits and pieces of information included in the input ratings are transformed into a virtual persona of the individual in the mind of the rater. This process is certainly affected by the knowledge base for input ratings, the objectivity and critical thinking skills of the rater, and the adherence of the rater to the BRACE Character Profile™ rating procedures, which are printed on the input form.
John Mark Karr’s Basic BRACE Character Profile™ Graphic:
Note: The A (black), B (red), and C (yellow) in the above chart and graphic corresponds to Type A, Type B, and Type C characteristics. Visual Comparison of John Mark Karr’s basic BRACE Character Profile™ graphic to the 10 DSM-IV-TR™ personality disorders:
Left Side Graphics Right Side Graphics 301.0 Paranoid (possible traits) 301.50 Histrionic (possible traits) 301.20 Schizoid (not likely) 301.81 Narcissistic (likely match) 310.22 Schizotypal (not likely) 301.82 Avoidant (not likely) 301.7 Antisocial (likely match) 301.6 Dependent (not likely) 301.83 Borderline (possible traits) 301.4 Obsessive-Comp. (not likely)
Basic Profile Analysis: Keeping in mind that the BRACE Character Profile™ measures maladaptive patterns of thought, behavior and motivation, there is clearly significant character pathology in each Domain (Cognitive, Behavioral, and Existential) and for each character Type (Type A, Type B, and Type C). Both Type B and Type C characteristics are exceptionally high in all three domains, which indicates that John Mark Karr is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of person who willingly cultivates and acts-out his obsessive desires --- i.e., deviant pleasure and comfort permeated with total power and control. There are no indications of any type of social, legal, or moral self-restraint, but rather, a single-minded determination to actively pursue thoughts and activities related to his idiosyncratic values and related experiences of pleasure/comfort, while simultaneously avoiding related consequences, responsibilities, and the normal stresses of life --- all at the expense of others. Power and control dominates all aspects of life and living, including all aspects of pleasure and comfort, all interpersonal interactions and relationships, all activities and interests, and his employment history. Note that each of these areas of functioning would directly reflect and accommodate his deviant motivations. His cognitive energies are spent creating opportunities related to his pathological desires. The most paradoxical aspect of his basic profile is that he must conceal his motives from others, yet he willingly acts on them in high risk situations, which suggests that fear and anxiety actually fuel his anger and enhance his perverted desires.
The moderate but “relatively” low Type A characteristics in each Domain suggests selective poor judgment, a tendency to be impulsive, a tendency to over generalize and inappropriately stereotype and discriminate, both against others and for self, all in combination with some level of intelligence, control and organized thinking. In this case, Type A characteristics do not reveal not reveal much about intelligence, except for the fact that, with Type B and Type C being so exceptionally high, a relatively low Type A indicates a more calculating, controlled and dangerous individual. If Type A was very low in the Cognitive Domain, it would suggest high intelligence and exceptional critical thinking skills. But, medium or high levels of Type A characteristics in the Cognitive Domain do not necessarily indicate low intelligence. Medium or high Type A characteristics in the Cognitive Domain could relate to psychosis, chronic patterns of substance abuse, brain damage, some type of developmental disability, or simply poor judgment due to personality dynamics, which appears to be the case for Karr. The taped phone conversations and email exchanges with Michael Tracey indicate that John Mark Karr is of above average intelligence. His vocabulary, sentence complexity, capacity for conditional thinking and reasoning, memory, general fund of knowledge, perceptual complexity, capacity to view matters from multiple perspectives, etc. all indicate above average intelligence (IQ estimated 120 to 130).
NOTE: With this and other graphic comparisons, one must keep in mind that similar Type and similar Domain scores may be generated by different underlying structures. When a more sophisticated analysis is required, the ratings that make up each component part of the graphics can be correlated for direct comparison with any “prototypical type” or any other individual in the database. It is a quantum leap into the nature of the person rated.
BRACE Character Profile™ CORRELATION SUMMARY ANALYSIS AIDES:
NOTE: A clinician using the BRACE Character Profile™ graphics and correlations for the DSM-IV-TR™ diagnostic categories will need to keep in mind that the DSM-IV-TR™ Personality Disorders are not equal in terms of the types of information used as a “diagnostic criteria” --- nor are they equal in terms of the number of available criteria that must be met in order for a diagnosis to be made --- nor are they equal in terms of the number and types of other qualifiers which must be taken into consideration in order to make a diagnosis. DSM-IV-TR™ is a categorical classification, but all members of a diagnostic class are not homogeneous, class boundaries are not clear, and there is significant overlap between “classifications.”
The BRACE Character Profile™ is a dimensional classification system which provides numerical and graphic information, which may be subthreashold, based on a quantification of core characteristics common to human nature. In fact, negative correlations provide as much clinical information as positive correlations. Bottom line is that visual comparisons of BRACE Character Profile™ graphics correlation charts help inform clinical opinion or the opinion of anyone familiar with the BRACE Character Profile™. Some alternatives can be ruled-out and others more seriously considered through a more detailed analysis of underlying variables and correlations.
The color coding used in the BRACE Character Profile™ correlation charts is somewhat like a traffic light:
• green is a GO for high positive correlation (.05 or higher). • yellow is a CAUTION for a positive correlation which deserves consideration (.1 to .06). • red is a STOP, which indicates a negative correlation of .1 or higher.
Actually, the negative correlations provide as much useful clinical and practical information as the positive correlations. It is the combination of high correlations, both positive and negative, that yields the analysis. If one knows how a person thinks, what a person thinks about, what a person does, and what a person wants, then the person is 100% profiled. On the flip side, if one knows how a person does NOT think, what a person does NOT think about, what a person does NOT do, and what a person does NOT want, then the person is also 100% profiled.
Considering the 10 DSM-IV-TR™ personality disorders, when there are several significant positive correlations and several significant negative correlations that consistently complement each other in terms of the functional characteristics, the individual profiled is well formulated and has a high level of definition provided by the stark contrasts.
Note that “Diagnostic Considerations” means exactly that ... consider ... and apply clinical skills. The correlations are indicators, but analysis requires consideration of known facts, other sources of information, and the analysis of each Type (A, B, and C) and each Domain (Cognitive, Behavior, and Existential). The BRACE Character Profile™ reflects patterns, characteristics of thought, behavior, and motivation --- it does not presume to make clinical diagnoses. There are many potential clinical paths to any cluster of cognitive-behavioral-existential characteristics.
The following correlation charts (analysis aides for profilers and clinicians) include prototypical types (i.e., archetypes) for the 10 DSM-IV-TR™ Personality Disorders, a 40-point HARE PCL-R, and Asperger’s Disorder.
The following corresponds to the columns in the above chart: 1 = Paranoid Personality Disorder (301.0) 7 = Narcissistic Personality Disorder (301.81) 2 = Schizoid Personality Disorder (301.20) 8 = Avoidant Personality Disorder (301.82) 3 = Schizotypal Personality Disorder (301.22) 9 = Dependent Personality Disorder (301.6) 4 = Antisocial Personality Disorder (301.7) 10 = Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (301.4) 5 = Borderline Personality Disorder (301.83) 11 = prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R 6 = Histrionic Personality Disorder (301.50) 12 = Asperger’s Disorder (299.80)
DIAGNOSTIC CONSIDERATIONS AND ANALYSIS
OVERALL: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.57), 301.0 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.54), and 301.7 Antisocial Personality Disorder (r = +0.25). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.75), 301.20 Schizoid Personality Disorder (r = -0.64), 301.82 Avoidant Personality Disorder (r = -0.62), 301.22 Schizotypal Personality Disorder (r = -0.37), and 299.80 Asperger’s Disorder (r = -0.35).
Analysis: Based on the current profile, John Mark Karr is predominantly a psychopath. There are no indications of psychosis and his behavioral dysfunctions are learned. All so-called psychopaths are antisocial in the sense that they willfully violate the rights of others, but at their core they are quite simply narcissistic --- acting-out their self-centered desires (both for pleasure/comfort and to avoid pain/discomfort), imposing their wills on others in the process. The significant negative correlations indicate that he is fiercely independent and assertive, is socially engaging and alert to social cues, generally has good communication skills, and is able to understand and relate to the verbal and nonverbal behavior of others. Similarly, he is able to relate to the emotions and motivations of others, both in terms of reflecting (role play, emulate) and eliciting (provoke, evoke).
Psychopaths are independent creatures who only rely on others as a matter of practical necessity. In fact, they are attracted to the most naive, dependent individuals in their behavioral environment because they are so easy to manipulate and exploit. John Mark Karr has progressively been “attracted” to younger and younger females. He recently claimed his current preference is five to nine year old “little girls,” but he may well progress to toddlers and infants. His current profile certainly indicates no social or moral taboos and he verbalizes little interest in normal sexual relationships.
DOMAIN DYSFUNCTION: COGNITIVE: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.69) and 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.50). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.88), 301.20 Schizoid Personality Disorder (r = -0.71), 301.82 Avoidant Personality Disorder (r = -0.68), 301.4 Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (r = -0.44), 299.80 Asperger’s Disorder (r = -0.41), and 301.22 Schizotypal Personality Disorder (r = -0.39).
Analysis: John Mark Karr’s imagination is full of ... John Mark Karr. The domain of his imagination is simply the stage for him to cultivate and covertly act-out his deviant self-serving fantasies, which are socially complex, exploitive, and rigidly structured. He would basically be in the role of a god, adored and bestowing adoration, exercising the power of life and death, and experimenting with his “subjects” to fulfill his increasingly anti-social, bizarre and idiosyncratic appetites.
BEHAVIOR: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.48) and Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.44). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.20 Schizoid Personality Disorder (r = -0.76), 301.22 Schizotypal Personality Disorder (r = -0.71), 288.90 Asperger’s Disorder (r = -0.62), 301.82 Avoidant Personality Disorder (r = -0.55), and 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.50).
Analysis: John Mark Karr willingly and consistently acts-out his deviant fantasies. His values are completely his own and his acting-out reflects them. He does what he wants, when he wants, regardless of the opinions of others. He actively seeks complete dominance and control in any relationship, essentially eliminating the possibility of true intimacy. He essentially disregards the adverse effects his self-serving behavior has on others. Although interpersonally engaging, he is independent and isolated in his social life, more a matter of choice than necessity or deficit social skills. He is socially sophisticated and willingly uses his social skills to deceive and manipulate others. Although violence is not his first means of problem solving, he has no inhibitions related to using force and violence.
EXISTENTIAL: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.76), Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.71), traits of 301.0 Paranoid Personality Disorder (r = +0.39), traits of 301.7 Antisocial Personality Disorder (r = +0.38), and traits of 301.4 Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (r = +0.35). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.86), 301.82 Avoidant Personality Disorder (r = -0.66), and 301.20 Schizoid Personality Disorder (r = -0.44).
Analysis: John Mark Karr’s desires are completely self-serving and exploitive. He is motivated to achieve total dominance and control in all aspects of daily living, including all social relationships and his sexual life. He is focused and single-minded in his determination and will expend high levels of energy to both create opportunities to exercise his imagination and act-out his fantasies. His beliefs and values are structured to justify his uninhibited self-expression and there is no room in his world for competition or contrary views. His deliberate indifference and systematic exploitation of others, in combination with his deviant fantasies and related acting-out, leave him acutely aware of his cognitive-behavioral isolation.
CHARACTER DYSFUNCTION:
TYPE A: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: traits of 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.37). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
Analysis: John Mark Karr’s poor judgment and related acting-out stems from his narcissistic lifestyle and world view. However, he is too socially aware and sophisticated to score as high in Type A characteristics as a prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R. This merely makes him more sinister, more dangerous, less subject to his immediate behavioral environment, and less predictable.
TYPE B: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.70), traits of 301.22 Schizotypal Personality Disorder (r = +0.36), and traits of 301.7 Antisocial Personality Disorder (r = +0.34) Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
Analysis: John Mark Karr’s thoughts, behavior, and motivation are characteristic of a psychopath. His high Type B characteristics reflect his preoccupation with matters of power and control, both covertly and overtly, his willingness to use force and violence, and his high motivation to not only acquire power and control but to exercise it. The Schizotypal traits reflect his general discomfort with adults, his self-imposed social alienation, and his cognitive distortions and eccentricities, including his sexual preferences and beliefs related to having special powers, such as serving as a medium to “connect” to the dead.
TYPE C: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.70). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: traits of 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.38)
Analysis: For John Mark Karr’s personal values for both positive reinforcement (gain or maintain pleasure/comfort) and negative reinforcement (avoid or escape pain/discomfort) are those of a psychopath --- i.e., void of empathy, corrupt, and totally self-serving.
CHARACTER X DOMAIN DYSFUNCTION:
COGNITIVE x TYPE A: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.71). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.72).
COGNITIVE x TYPE B: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +1.00) and traits of 301.7 Antisocial Personality Disorder (r = +0.65). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
COGNITIVE x TYPE C: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.4 Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (r = -0.65)
Analysis: Note that John Mark Karr’s cognitive functioning for Type B characteristics, which relate to matters of power and control, are an absolute match for a prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R. The Type C Obsessive-Compulsive characteristics indicate that his fantasy scripts and scenarios are detailed and precise, strongly suggesting that his victims must dress and act in very specific ways, all entirely under his direction and control.
BEHAVIOR x TYPE A: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: 301.4 Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (r = +0.79). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.20 Schizoid Personality Disorder (r = -0.87) and 301.22 Schizotypal Personality Disorder (r = -0.69).
BEHAVIOR x TYPE B: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +0.79). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
BEHAVIOR x TYPE C: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: None. Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: 301.4 Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (r = -1.00) and 301.6 Dependent Personality Disorder (r = -0.80).
Analysis: John Mark Karr is stubborn, exploitive, and interpersonally controlling to a fault. He is an active hedonist who sets his own values. He is amoral, quick to anger, and readily exercises power and control whenever possible.
EXISTENTIAL x TYPE A: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: None. Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
EXISTENTIAL x TYPE B: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: None. Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
EXISTENTIAL x TYPE C: Significant Positive Correlations in rank order: Prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R (r = +1.00) and 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.75). Significant Negative Correlations in rank order: None.
Analysis: When it comes to pleasure and comfort, John Mark Karr has absolutely no restraints or restrictions related to his desire. He is an absolute match for a prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R. His desires are strictly one-way and self-serving, with no reciprocal consideration for others.
SUMMARY CONCLUSIONS: John Mark Karr is a psychopathic pedophile. He is clearly narcissistic, but his antisocial characteristics are generally secondary to his amoral nature. His relatively high intelligence and good social skills make him a particularly sinister and dangerous character. He is a self-professed lover of “little girls” and there is no reason to believe he will change his mind, his behavior, or his desires.
